With coastal ecosystems, wetlands, dunes, and some of the best-preserved forest environments anywhere in Europe, Doñana boasts exceptional levels of biodiversity.
Covering an area of 122,488 ha, it is considered Europe’s most important wetland, owing to the biodiversity it contains. Moreover, Doñana’s geographical location makes it particularly significant in terms of the impacts of climate change. In this protected natural area, major impacts have already been identified with regard to the functioning of certain key ecosystems (cork oak forests and Mediterranean scrubland). Incidences of wood decay have been observed, along with an increase in the presence of exotic invasive species.
